China, Harbin Old Jewish Synagogue to be reconstructed to its Century Old Look

China Harbin --- The Jewish old synagogues and the Jewish school are located on Tongjiang Street, between 82nd and 86th Streets, in Daoli district of Harbin. The foundation of the old Jewish synagogue was laid in 1907, and construction was completed in 1909. Because of a fire in 1931, it was reconstructed and expanded to 2,403 square meters.

The Jewish high school was built in 1910, and in 1916 it became the Jewish secondary school. Covering an area of 2,620 square meters, it was the first Jewish secondary school in the far East. The famous Alexander Konstantinovich Glazunov music high school that was founded in 1925 was also located in this building.

In February 2013, the Harbin City Government decided that the old Jewish synagogue and its surrounding environmental area will undergo renovation and full restoration, and all structures be integrated into a one complete sphere during this year.

But because of the 1931 renovation of the old Jewish synagogue, after it was burned by fire, all architectural drawings, interior pictures and other information have not yet been found.

To ensure the preservation and the historical and cultural importance of the Harbin Jewish old synagogue in accordance with its original state, we believe and hope that the Israel Association of Former Residents of China as well as people of all walks of life who have information and knowledge especially about Harbin Jewish life, would come forward and assist us in providing related drawings, pictures and other information of substance, to further perfect and enrich the historical fragment of the life of Jews in China, for the benefit of continued writing of the epic of Chinese and Jewish friendship.

中国哈尔滨犹太老会堂将再现百年前风貌

中国哈尔滨犹太老会堂和犹太中学分别位于哈尔滨市道里区通江街82号、86号。其中犹太老会堂于1907年奠基，1909年落成。因1931年发生火灾，当年重新修复、扩建，建筑面积2403平方米。犹太中学1910年建成，1916年创办犹太中学，建筑面积2620平方米，是远东地区的第一所犹太中学，1925年成立的著名的格拉祖诺夫高等音乐学校也曾坐落于此。

2013年2月，哈尔滨市政府决定对犹太老会堂及周边地区环境进行综合改造，全面恢复当年犹太老会堂及周边建筑风貌。

但由于犹太老会堂在1931年遭受火灾后实施了翻建，而翻建后的建筑图纸以及内部装饰图片等资料目前尚未查到。同时，为确保哈尔滨犹太老会堂建筑文化能够按照原貌恢复，现诚请“以色列原居中国犹太人协会”和广大仁人志士，特别是在哈尔滨生活过的犹太人后裔们，能协助提供哈尔滨犹太总会堂的相关图纸、图片和犹太人在哈尔滨的生活资料，以进一步完善和丰富犹太人在中国生活的历史片段，真实续写中华民族与犹太人的友谊史诗。
